One of my favorite memories from growing up is sitting down with my parents and my brother and sister to watch slideshows. Remember those? We would pull out the big screen—the one that squeaked when you pulled it up—set up the projector and the little carousels of slides, and settle onto the couch together.

We would see pictures of family vacations and birthday parties, celebrations and ordinary days. There were people I knew and people I didn’t, places I remembered and places I only knew because someone told me the story.

Those slideshows were one of the ways I learned where I came from.

Hebrews 11 feels a little like one of those old family slideshows. One by one, another picture clicks into place: Abraham and Sarah. Isaac and Jacob. Moses and Rahab. Gideon and David and Samuel. The family scrapbook of faith.

But when we look closely at those pictures, we discover something important: these were not perfect people.

They doubted. They got scared. They made mistakes. They tried to take matters into their own hands. Sometimes they trusted God beautifully, and sometimes they really didn't.

And still, God worked through them.

Their stories became part of a much bigger story of God's faithfulness—a story that continued long after their own lives were over.

Then Hebrews 12 turns the camera toward us: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses… let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus.”  (Hebrews 12:1-2a).

Suddenly, we aren't just looking through the family album.

We are part of it.

Generation after generation, someone kept sharing the story. Someone kept trusting the promise. Someone prayed. Someone taught. Someone served. Someone loved. Someone kept showing up even when they were tired or uncertain or couldn't see what God was doing.

And eventually, somehow, the story was handed to us.

Now it is our turn to run our part of the race.

There may be prayers we pray whose answers we never see. Seeds we plant that don't bloom until another generation. There may be acts of kindness, courage, generosity, or faithfulness that seem incredibly ordinary to us, but someday become part of someone else's story.

Maybe they will remember our names or maybe they won't.  Because ultimately, this isn't about making sure we are remembered. It is about making sure the story continues.

We don't have to run perfectly. None of the witnesses before us did. We simply run faithfully, trusting the One who has been faithful through every generation before us.

We keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. We carry what has been entrusted to us. And when the time comes, we entrust it to those who will run after us.

Someday, we will be part of someone else's cloud of witnesses.

May the faith we live today give them courage to keep running.  Amen.
