A first visit anywhere can be stressful. So we want to make things as easy as possible and help you to know what to expect.
Below are some frequently asked questions that will give you an idea of what to expect when you visit Covenant Church of Schaumburg. Don’t hesitate to call the church office, (847) 605-8334, or contact us if you have more questions.
Where do I park?
We have a large parking lot located in front and to the sides of our building.
When should I arrive?
Sunday morning worship services begin at 10:30 am. In addition to worship there are classes for literally every age group before starting at 9:30. If you want to attend a class, you probably should arrive around 9:20, if you are attending the service only, try to arrive around 10:15 – 10:20.
Will I be met at the door?
When you come into our lobby, an usher will greet you and be available to answer any questions you have. Attached to pews are visitor cards that we hope you’ll fill out. You may put the card in the offering plate or give it to the usher or pastor as you leave.
Where do I go?
Our Welcome Center is located a few feet inside the main entrance. A greeter is there to answer any questions you may have and direct you to worship service, youth meetings, nursery, classes, etc. Sunday Morning Schedule
What happens if I get there a bit early?
Each Sunday morning, we have coffee service and food table set up in the welcome center area. Some folks enjoy getting there a bit early to enjoy a cup of coffee and chat before worship begins. So, grab some coffee and a muffin and make yourself at home.
What about my kids? Do they come into the service with me or is there something going on for them?
We have nursery for the full worship hour for infants and toddlers. Pre-schoolers through 4th graders stay in the service for the music portion of worship and then go to Children’s Church for age specific learning and fun.
What about Sunday school?
We offer classes for children and adults. Children ages 3 through high school meet in age-level classes from 9:30 to 10:15. Adults meet in a variety of classes that offer general interest lessons and lots of fellowship. These classes also meet from 9:30 to 10:15, which allows you to attend Sunday school and worship service. Newcomers are always welcome!
How should I dress?
The atmosphere at Covenant Church of Schaumburg is friendly, and dress is typically more casual. Dress comfortably. You’ll find people here, though, in a wide variety of styles of dress from T-shirt, shorts & flip-flops to shirt & tie or a dress (and anything in between)! It doesn’t really make a difference to us. The church is more interested in you than in how you dress. So do what’s comfortable for you.
Will I be singled out as a visitor?
We consider you a guest not a visitor. Our commitment is to create a welcoming atmosphere where you will feel at home. We will not put you on the spot by having you stand and say something in service, or sing a solo. You will have an opportunity at your own choosing to fill out a welcome card.
Who can I talk to if I have more questions when I visit?
We have an Information Center in the Lobby which is clearly marked, and staffed by a friendly & helpful person (or two) who should be able to answer most of your questions. They can also help you find any particular ministry point people or leaders for whom you may want to speak with for more in-depth information.
How long does your worship service last?
Our services are scheduled to last one hour and 15 minutes. They occasionally run a few minutes longer but that is the exception rather than the rule.
What kind of music can I expect?
Sunday worship services at Covenant Church of Schaumburg are a mixture of old and new styles and sounds. We worship God through hymns, worship songs, with choir, piano and organ.
Do I have to sing?
Singing is part of our worship together. Our music director and choir does a great job of leading us and making it comfortable to sing along or even just listen.
What’s your style of worship?
We use a variety of music and artistic expression in worship. Pastoral Messages are biblically based, relevant and challenging. We worship as a community, just as we are, usually casual in our attire. Our primary worship space is in the Sanctuary.
Our worship leadership is bringing a variety of experiences into worship at this time. The congregational singing will typically include some traditional pieces with organ and piano, as well as a variety of contemporary songs with guitars, bass and drums. We pray, share, and hear every week a challenging and encouraging message from God’s Word.
The sermons are designed to educate in the Bible, to explore what that means in your life, and to engage in everyday life what you have learned. It is our desire that every part of the service including singing, prayer, the sermon, and the time following the service be a meaningful time for you.
Will I know what to do?
Well, we don’t have any secret codes or anything! As we said above, when you arrive you’ll receive a program for the morning at the welcome center. It outlines what will be happening during worship so you’ll be able to see what is coming next. Check out our bulleting page to see recent bulletins.
Do you take an offering? If so, am I expected to give?
We do not take a weekly offering. However, occasionally we do for a special cause. We have a basket by the door for donations. You are our guest and you should not feel obligated to give.
How often do you have communion?
The first Sunday of the month we receive communion.
Can anyone take communion?
In the Covenant, we practice what is called “Open Communion.” That simply means that you do not need to be a member of our Church, nor of our denomination (The Evangelical Covenant Church) in order to participate in communion.
Are you going to collect my personal information?
We have what we call a contact card inserted in our program. This is a card that you can choose to fill out to let us know you visited us. It also provides a way for you to tell us how we can pray for you or possibly answer any other questions you might have. You can be as detailed as you like in completing it or you can choose not to fill it out at all. If it’s your first time visiting us, you will simply receive a quick follow up phone call later in the week to thank you for visiting us and invite you back again.
What happens after the service?
After our service, we like to greet our visitors and catch up with one another for fellowship. Join us in Fellowship Hall (the back of our church) for coffee hour.
What Is The Fellowship time about?
We have about a half hour of fun, food, and casual interaction every Sunday following the service. This is a great time to make new friends and get caught up with others.
